FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sturgis, South Dakota – March 19, 2025
Indivisible Rapid City (IRC) strongly condemns the unprovoked physical and verbal confrontations that took place during its peaceful protest at the Sturgis Vets Club in Sturgis, South Dakota. The rally, organized to stand up for veterans’ rights and oppose harmful cuts to VA services and federal jobs, was marred by an incident of violence and intimidation against a participant.
During the event, multiple protesters were approached by individuals from the Sturgis Vets Club who engaged in negative confrontations. In one alarming instance, John Griffith(Pictured Below), a member of the Lawrence County Democrats and an IRC partner, was shoved to the ground without provocation, followed by an escalation of verbal aggression.
At the time of the incident, Sturgis Police were already inside the Sturgis Vets Club with Representative Dusty Johnson. When an officer exited the building, an IRC member accompanied Griffith to file a formal report in the Sturgis Vets Club parking lot. The incident was documented, and video footage of the report being made has been provided to authorities.
Additionally, two individuals threatened an IRC protester for wearing an American Legion Post 240 hat, claiming they would report them to the American Legion State Commander for being “out of uniform” while protesting. Despite these attempts at intimidation, the protester stood firm in their right to peacefully demonstrate.
IRC also expresses disappointment with Representative Dusty Johnson, who was present at the venue but failed to acknowledge or engage with the protesters.
A Call for Accountability and Respect
Indivisible Rapid City reaffirms that peaceful protest is a fundamental right and that any attempt to silence dissent through violence or intimidation is unacceptable. The organization calls for:
• A full investigation into the assault that took place.
• A commitment from local authorities to ensure that future protests can be conducted without fear of violence or harassment.
• Accountability from Representative Dusty Johnson, who ignored his constituents rather than engaging in dialogue.
“We came here today to stand up for veterans and their rights,” said an IRC spokesperson. “Instead, we were met with hostility and aggression from individuals who should be fighting alongside us, not against us. We will not be intimidated, and we will continue to hold our leaders accountable.”
