John Lewis\, we will peacefully protest along with the rest of the nation. \nJohn Lewis was a towering figure in the American civil rights movement and a longtime U.S. congressman who believed in the power of nonviolent protest. He famously urged people to “get in good trouble\, necessary trouble” to stand up against injustice—a phrase that became both a personal mantra and a rallying cry for generations of activists \n \nJohn Lewis’s activism was marked by a series of courageous and history-shaping events: \n\nFreedom Rides (1961): As one of the original 13 Freedom Riders\, Lewis risked his life challenging segregation on interstate buses across the South. He was beaten and arrested multiple times\, but never wavered in his commitment to nonviolence.\nMarch on Washington (1963): At just 23\, Lewis was the youngest speaker at this iconic event. As chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)\, he delivered a fiery speech demanding civil rights and justice.\nBloody Sunday (1965): Perhaps the most searing moment of his activism\, Lewis led over 600 marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma\, Alabama.
