April 13, 2025

RAPID CITY, SD — April 16, 2025 — On Wednesday from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, community members will hold a silent protest at Baken Park in Rapid City, specifically on the public sidewalk in front of Qdoba and Black Hills Urgent Care (741 Mountain View Rd), facing Mountain View Road.

The action is in direct response to Senator John Thune’s scheduled appearance at a private, Republicans-only luncheon hosted by the Pennington County Republican Women, and reflects growing frustration among constituents who are being denied public forums and town halls.

Participants are asked to:

  • Wear black
  • Arrive 10 minutes early
  • Remain silent
  • Use protest signs that will be provided on-site

Parking is available in the southeast Family Fare parking lot (751 Mountain View Rd).

“This isn’t just about being shut out of a lunch,” said a local Indivisible volunteer. “It’s about being shut out of our democracy. Senator Thune was elected to serve all South Dakotans—not just registered Republicans. If he won’t listen to our voices, he’ll have to face our silence.”

The protest will be a peaceful yet powerful demonstration of collective dissent and a call for greater accountability from public officials who appear increasingly inaccessible to the very people they were elected to represent: every South Dakotan and every American — not just those who identify as Republican.

Indivisible Rapid City is part of a nationwide grassroots movement fighting for democracy, equity, and a government that works for everyone—not just the wealthy, powerful, or politically connected.
